Woman’s Club honors Veterans

By Diane Clifton

The Gilchrist County Woman’s Club’s Veterans Day observances began early with the patriotic theme of the November 10 regular meeting. Members welcomed several guests as everyone shared a meal of soups, sandwiches, pies and cakes.
Thank you to the Perky Pretty “Patriotic” Penguins (the Membership Committee)-Chris Schreiber, Theresa Sapp, Jean Troke, Karen Gendreau, Susan Rothman, and Gwen Walden for hosting this meeting.

Judge Ed Philman is shown with his brother Admiral David “Lavon” Philman

Treasurer Donna Hayes reported on the club’s recent fundraising efforts, including cookbook and Christmas ornament sales, the indoor rummage sale, and the Pork BBQ Lunch. Many members contributed to these club projects with ticket sales, promotion and other support. Gilchrist County residents have been wonderfully supportive of these club activities.
The Program Committee distributed the 2011-2012 Yearbook to members in attendance. If you missed the meeting, contact Annie Talley to arrange for getting your copy. Other committees reported on events planned for the rest of the club year, including the annual Christmas party scheduled for December 8 and hosted by the Social Locals (the Social Committee). Members, spouses, and guests will be treated to a catered dinner and focus on having some holiday fun with a white elephant gift exchange. Look for more details from President Cindy Slaughter. Members were urged to start planning their entries for the January Arts and Crafts competition. For information about entry guidelines contact Lois Scott.
Many Veterans joined us at the clubhouse on Friday morning, November 11, for a hearty breakfast on a brilliantly clear, but chilly day. Twenty Woman’s Club members were on hand to fix coffee, sausage, biscuits, sausage gravy, waffles and pancakes and to serve baked goods, fruit cocktail, and juice. The Veterans lingered over the meal to swap stories and renew friendships in a warm, relaxed setting. Club members were pleased to again have the opportunity to express their gratitude to our Veterans for their service. Thank you to all of the members of the community who supported the breakfast through their donations.
