Bell seniors crowned at Homecoming ‘09

By BHS Student Government

Bell High School’s 2009 Homecoming, “A Homecoming to Remember”, was a huge success.
Having a short week due to a teacher workday made Homecoming Week a hectic one, but it was well worth it as students, faculty, and the community enjoyed the festivities and excitement that Homecoming brings to Bell High School every year.
Students and teachers dressed up as their favorite old television family members on Tuesday, showed off their wacky cartoon characters on Cartoon Wednesday, remembered how the teenagers of the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s looked on “Remember Those Teenagers?” Day and finally took pride in their Purple and Gold colors on Friday’s Spirit Day.
On Thursday night, the Iris Roberts Auditorium was once again filled to capacity as the community helped students and faculty honor the Bell Bulldogs’ football team at the annual “Bulldog Growl”.
Bell High School Social Studies teacher and host of the Growl, Brad Surrency and High School Guidance Counselor Dana Collins, got the Growl going as Ricky and Lucy Ricardo doing a hilarious musical number from the old “I Love Lucy” television show. The Bell Purple Powerhouse Marching Band rocked the house and got everybody dancing in their seats with their exciting musical numbers and awesome drum solos. The Bulldogs football team even got up on stage during one of the band’s musical hits to do some impromptu dance moves. While the BHS Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders got the crowd’s spirits moving with their very well choreographed cheers and dance routines, the Bell Junior and Senior classes were the stars of the show with their overly hilarious skits.
The Junior class showed their superhero side by beating up some Paxon Eagles dressed as the old “SuperFriends” cartoon characters. Superman, Bat-girl, Auqaman, the Wonder Twins, and the Flash all did their part to take down the Eagle bad guys, but by the end of the skit, the Junior football players ended up saving the day.
The Senior class skit had the crowd sit in on what a teacher-parent conference would look like with “The Addams Family”. Everyone in the audience was laughing loudly as the seniors showed eerily accurate portrayals of some of their favorite teachers and guidance counselors in their skit.
In the end, it was enough to put the seniors over the top as they received first place in the skit contest followed by a very close second by the juniors.
Even though the Bell High School “Faculty All-Stars” did not make the show, they did show the crowd some of their “Growing Pains” as a slide show presented how some of BHS’ teachers and administrators looked as babies, students, and finally adults. Students and community members laughed and cheered as the faculty showed that they were good sports. Of course, one of the highlights of the evening was the crowning of the Bell Middle School Prince and Princess, Anthony Langford and Shelby Langford by last year’s Princess Olivia Bailey and last year’s Prince contestant, Hunter Langford.
The 2009 Homecoming Parade on Friday was definitely one to be remembered as the parade showed off some of the best Homecoming floats the parade had ever had. The parade judges had a very difficult decision choosing between all the nostalgic television show floats, including the 6th grade M*A*S*H float, the Freshman “Classic Cartoons” float, the Sophomore’s “Flintstones” float, the Junior’s “SuperFriends” float, the Senior’s “Addams Family” float, HOSA’s “Classic Walt Disney” float, and the Criminal Justice Academy’s “Andy Griffith Show” float.
In the end, for the second year in a row, the BHS Health Academy won, followed by the second place Sophomores and a tie for third between the Seniors and the Criminal Justice Academy. Thanks to all the community and school organizations that participated in the parade.
As the evening began and game time was about to begin, the 2009 Homecoming Court was presented during pregame festivities.
Every attendant from 6th to 11th grade and all the Senior King and Queen contestants looked radiant on the field as the standing room only crowd gathered to witness the pageantry.
Everyone loudly cheered as last year’s King and Queen, Christopher Landrum and Holli Moore crowned 2009’s new King and Queen, Daniel Heck and Chelsea Meyer.
Although the Mighty Bulldogs were unable to secure a victory, Homecoming ended on a high note with a very successful and fun Homecoming Dance following the big game.
The Bell High School Student Government would like to thank everyone who helped in the festivities and supported us during this fun-filled week.
This was definitely a “Homecoming to Remember.”
