Gilchrist County Woman’s Club newsThe Gilchrist County Woman’s Club met on Thursday, October 8, and there were some creative costumes being entered for the contest including some homemade ones. The Publicity committee chaired this month’s meeting and prepared a lovely feast for the members.
In conjunction with October being National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the featured speaker was Ms. Margaret Shaw from the American Cancer Society (ACS). Ms. Shaw, who works with Patient Services, shared tips on the importance of monthly self-examination for women and the types of foods which are possible causes of cancer. ACS provides a multitude of services which are available to cancer patients, including a 24-hour oncology support staff consisting of medical personnel who are available to answer questions from treatments and medications to coping with cancer via 1-800-ACS-2345. “Reach to Recovery” is another program which matches patients one-on-one based on age group, types of treatment with a survivor as a mentor to comfort and provide an opportunity for emotional grounding and informed decision-making. “Look and Feel Better” helps women on beauty tips while dealing with radiation or chemotherapy treatments. The “Road to Recovery” program, providing rides to patients for treatment when they are unable to drive themselves, is another service offered by ACS. Ms. Shaw, who is the area coordinator, trains and recruits volunteer drivers to drive patients for treatment at the Gainesville hospitals. If you would like to volunteer, please contact 352-376-6866 ext 6063 or email Margaret.shaw@cancer.org. Locally, the next Tri-County Relay For Life will be held on May 7 in Trenton at the Middle-High School Track. |
