Sanders says, ‘Stop the sale of K2-Spice’

By John M. Ayers

Members of the Bell Town Council talked at length Thursday night about a 15-year-old Bell student who used K2-Spice, a synthetic marijuana, that was purchased at a convenience store across from Bell High School.
Councilman Hugh Sanders said he was adamantly opposed to K2-Spice being sold in Bell.
Prior to the 15-year-old’s use of the product on Friday, Aug. 26, which led to Gilchrist County EMS being called to treat the juvenile, the council and the community were reportedly unaware that this type of product was available to anyone over the age of 18 at Country Quick Stop.

Many local residents now want to know how a juvenile obtained this product, which he then smoked in a pipe on the school campus, last week in Bell.
After much discussion, the council took action upon a motion by Hugh Sanders and a second from Kenny Bass to have staff send a letter to the store owner asking him not to sell the product in the store.
The board voted unanimously in support of this action.
David M. Lang, Jr., attorney for the Town of Bell, was asked if he would research this K2-Spice product and provide the board with further information on the possibility that the council can have the product banned from being sold in the Town of Bell.
The product which is a synthetic marijuana, is being sold as herbal incense.
In other Bell Town Council news, the Town of Bell will hold a tentative budget meeting on Monday, Sept. 12, to discuss and approve a tentative financial plan for the 2011-12 fiscal year.
“The Town of Bell has had a strong financial year in 2010-2011, and the municipality has received more revenues than were anticipated, explained Dan Cavanah, town manager.
Cavanah also said that the State of Florida reduced funding to the Town of Bell in 2011-2012, but this will only result in a $1,085 loss in revenue to the municipality.
Council members were provided with a proposed budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year in Thursday’s meeting. The council will review the proposed budget and take action on the proposed guideline in the September 12 special meeting. A final adoption hearing will be held in late September.
