Handgun found by work crew has not been recovered

A handgun that was discovered in trash at Gilchrist County Solid Waste by a work crew from Lancaster Correctional Institute has reportedly gone missing.
According to Lt. David Aderholt of the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, a call came in last Friday that a handgun had been located and then went missing.
“The correctional officer the gun was turned over to was unable to turn it over to us,” Aderholt said. “We were called well after the fact.”
The handgun had not been recovered at press time, and according to Aderholt the Sheriff’s Office will be looking into the particulars.
However, Lancaster Correctional has turned the incident over to the Inspector General’s Office of the Department of Corrections in Tallahassee for further investigation.
