A Trenton police officer called for backup Friday night when he noticed a vehicle with an out of state license plate parked behind Southern States and suspected its driver was attempting to steal anhydrous ammonia.
Javier Morales, 23, of Valdosta, Georgia was subsequently arrested and charged with trespass and resisting arrest.
According to a press release issued by Sheriff Daniel Slaughter, a second suspect managed to escape; and his identity is being withheld due to further investigation.
The incident started on Friday evening when Officer J.C. Thomas of the Trenton Police Department spotted the suspicious vehicle parked on Tyler Grade. Thomas suspected the inhabitants of the vehicle were trying to get past the perimeter fence surrounding Southern States in an effort to steal anhydrous ammonia, a fertilizer used to manufacture methamphetamine.
According to Sheriff Slaughter, Sgt. Troy Davis and Deputy Steven Stalvey of the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and discovered the two suspects inside the fence with equipment capable of storing the anhydrous ammonia.
