Dress in red, white and blue on Monday in celebration of America’s armed forces, and join the citizens of Gilchrist County on the courthouse lawn for a Memorial Day program.Sponsored by the Gilchrist County Historical Society in cooperation with the Veterans Service Office, this year’s Memorial Day program will be a reverent service honoring those who have served and continue to serve so that Americans will have freedom.
“You Are Not Forgotten,” as this year’s program has been named, will pay tribute to all veterans of the United States armed forces beginning at 11 a.m.
“It is our distinct privilege to honor the memory of those who have given their lives in service to our beloved United States of America, and to salute those who are serving,” said J. M. Everett, president of the Gilchrist County Historical Society.
The 2010 Memorial Day program will begin with a welcome from J. M. Everett, just before Master of Ceremonies Dan Taylor takes the stage. Jose Centron will then pray and members of the Bell High School JROTC will present the colors. The National Anthem will then be sung by Kevin Randolph, son of Pete and Jan Randolph of Trenton.
Several distinguished speakers will take the podium, including Harold Mikell, who is a Gilchrist County native and veteran of World War II. A keynote address will be given by Major Stroup, veterans service officer for Gilchrist County.
Veteran Ted Henley will lead a wreath laying ceremony as Gabrielle Hunter plays “Amazing Grace” on her trumpet. A single cannon will then be fired by members of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans. The program will conclude with the playing of “Taps” and a benediction by Pete Randolph. All veterans, their families and friends are invited to a free luncheon that will follow the morning program. The luncheon will be held at the Trenton Community Center and begin around noon.
