A Newberry woman driving to work on Friday morning died in a head-on collision on Archer Road in Gainesville.
Phyllis Kelley Pumphrey, 54, of Newberry was driving a 2001 Volvo S90 east on State Road 24 at 6:45 a.m. Whitney Ann Green, 24, of Bronson was driving a 2011 Kia Sorento west on State Road 24 when she reportedly crossed the center line, striking Pumphrey’s vehicle on its left front side. After the initial impact, Green’s vehicle spun around and hit another vehicle traveling behind Pumphrey’s car before coming to a stop on the westbound shoulder of the road. Pumphrey’s vehicle rotated counter clockwise before coming to a stop on the eastbound shoulder of the road.
Pumphrey was pronounced dead at Shands Hospital where she worked as an oncology nurse practitioner. Green was taken to North Florida Regional with serious injuries. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Charges are pending further investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
