Speed reduction proposed on CR 232 east of SR 47

By John M. Ayers

The Gilchrist County Commission listened as Road Department Superintendent Billy Cannon requested the speed of traffic around Center Hill Church of Christ, in northeast Gilchrist County, be reduced to 45 miles per hour on CR 232 east.
The supervisor explained that a member of the church, Roosevelt Stalvey contacted him and asked for a reduction of speed from 55 miles per hour to slow the traffic down in the area.
Cannon explained to the commission that additional signage would need to be added in the designated area beginning at the intersection of SR 47, at the intersection of the caution light and continuing east on CR 232 for 1.2 miles.
This area of highway has an increasing level of residential homes and several large hills that urge traffic to slow.
Commissioner Kenrick Thomas made a motion to have the requested speed change submitted to the county attorney so an ordinance can be drafted for the speed limit change.
Commissioner Tommy Langford agreed and seconded the motion.
The board voted 4-0 in favor of the motion.
Commissioner Randy Durden was out of town and unable to attend this meeting.
Gilchrist County Attorney John McPherson advised the board that a resolution to reduce the speed would be prepared and presented in an upcoming meeting.
