A Trenton woman sustained serious injuries in a single vehicle accident over the weekend that claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman who was pregnant with her sixth child.
Shannon Cordery, 28, of Old Town, died when the 2003 Ford Explorer she was traveling in crashed at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, 11 miles west of Cross City.
Cordery and her friend Jennifer King, 33, of Trenton were traveling west on SW 466th Avenue when for, an unknown reason, the driver of the vehicle drove north causing the front of the SUV to hit a metal tube gate.
According to Cpl. Berger of the Florida Highway Patrol, a portion of the metal tube gate impaled the front windshield, entering the passenger compartment and striking Cordery, causing fatal injuries.
The vehicle then reportedly overturned.
At press time it had not been determined who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. Charges were pending further investigation.
A 2002 Dixie County High School graduate, Cordery joined the United States Army after high school, where she served as a chaplain’s assistant and was part of the military police. At the time of her passing, Cordery was a member of the United States Army Ready Reserves.
Family members and friends gathered for Cordery’s visitation on Wednesday, March 28, at Rick Gooding Funeral Home in Cross City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 at Faith Baptist Church. Interment will follow at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
