After being arrested, the two women admitted to working together to steal more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from the JCPenney store inside the Oaks Mall in Gainesville.
According to deputies, loss prevention employees at JCPenney observed the two women enter the store without shopping bags and later walk out with bags filled with multiple items, including silverware, drapes and cookware. Both Hayes-Luzader and Bellot were booked into the Alachua County Jail on January 5 and released the following day on their own recognizance.
Sherry Lynn Hayes-Luzader made the news in November when she publicly criticized Sheriff Slaughter and his administration for not acknowledging that she had solved a crime in Gilchrist County and also for not hiring her for a position within the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office because she was “overqualified” for the job. In the letter, Hayes-Luzader also said that she was working on her second doctorate degree.
